Grammar, one point at a time
A は B より ... means A is more ... than B
A は B より adjective ですより marks B as the comparison standard, and topic A has more of the stated quality. Add ずっと when the difference is large. Do not force より into English than word order.
Examples
- この 電車は バスより 速いです。This train is faster than the bus.
- 冬の 北京は 東京より ずっと 寒いです。Beijing winters are much colder than Tokyo winters.
B より A のほうが ... places the stronger item after より
B より A のほうが adjective ですThis pattern gives comparison standard B first and identifies A as the selected side with Aのほう. It has the same direction as AはBより..., with a different information focus.
Examples
- 肉より 魚のほうが いいです。I prefer fish to meat.
- 大阪より 東京のほうが 人が 多いです。Tokyo has more people than Osaka.
A は B ほど ... ない means A is not as ... as B
A は B ほど adjective-negativeほど marks B as the higher standard, and the ending must be negative: くない for an i-adjective and ではありません for a na-adjective. It does not mean A entirely lacks the quality, only that its degree is lower.
Examples
- 東京の 冬は 北京ほど 寒くないです。Tokyo winters are not as cold as Beijing winters.
- 神戸は 大阪ほど にぎやかではありません。Kobe is not as lively as Osaka.
Use いちばん for the strongest item after stating the set
set の中で item が いちばん adjective ですMark the comparison set with 〜の中で, the strongest item with が, and degree with いちばん. A place or period can directly form the scope with 日本で or 一年で. Context may allow omission, but beginners should state the scope.
Examples
- スポーツの 中で サッカーが いちばん おもしろいです。Football is the most interesting sport.
- 日本で いちばん 高い 山は 富士山です。Mount Fuji is the highest mountain in Japan.
Use どちら for two choices and answer with のほう or どちらも
A と B と どちらが adjective ですかUse どちら when comparing exactly two items; conversational どっち is possible. Choose one with Aのほうが..., or say どちらも... when both are equal or both apply.
Examples
- 日本語と 英語と どちらが 難しいですか。Which is more difficult, Japanese or English?
- どちらも おもしろいです。Both are interesting.
For three or more, choose どの, どれ, だれ, 何, or いつ by the target
set の中で question-word が いちばん adjective ですかUse どの料理 with a following noun, どれ for known visible choices, だれ for people, 何 for a category or content, and いつ for a season or time. Do not use two-item どちら for three or more choices.
Examples
- 果物の 中で 何が いちばん 好きですか。Which fruit do you like best?
- 季節の 中で いつが いちばん 好きですか。Which season do you like best?
Expressions and situations
最近 covers the recent past through now, not the future
The length of 最近 depends on speaker and topic and may cover days, months, or longer, but it does not directly mean the near future. Use 近いうちに or もうすぐ for upcoming time.
- 最近 忙しくなりました。I have become busy recently.
- もうすぐ 北京へ 行きます。I will go to Beijing soon.
N がいいです can recommend, choose, or prefer
何がいいですか can ask what would be suitable. In a comparison, 魚のほうがいいです can mean preferring fish. The context determines the meaning beyond simply good.
- お土産は 何が いいですか。What would be a good souvenir?
- わたしは 紅茶のほうが いいです。I would prefer black tea.
やっぱり is the conversational form of やはり
It can mean that the result matched an expectation or that, after considering alternatives, the speaker returned to the original conclusion. やはり is more formal.
- やっぱり 雨が 降りました。It rained after all.
- やっぱり 緑茶が いいです。After all, I would like green tea.
Sentence-final が can leave a difficulty, refusal, or qualification implicit
が normally links a contrast. Stopping at 席ですが... can politely imply that this is my seat. Such implication depends on shared context and is unsuitable when responsibility or safety instructions must be explicit.
- あのう、そこは わたしの 席ですが……。Excuse me, that is my seat...
お酒 can mean alcohol generally or sake specifically
In a general conversation about drinking, お酒 can mean alcoholic drinks. When contrasted with beer or shochu, or on a particular menu, it may refer to sake. Use context and labels.
- お酒は 飲みません。I do not drink alcohol.
- 日本酒を 少し ください。A little sake, please.
ずっと before the adjective emphasizes a large comparison gap
In a comparison, ずっと means much, as in ずっと寒い. It can also mean continuously, so identify the meaning from the sentence pattern.
- 新幹線は バスより ずっと 速いです。The Shinkansen is much faster than a bus.
人気があります means be popular
人気 does not simply mean many people. Say Nは人気があります for something popular, and it can also describe a popular person.
- この お茶は 人気が あります。This tea is popular.
What you should be able to do
- Keep the comparison direction consistent between AはBより and BよりAのほうが.
- Rewrite an affirmative comparison with ほど + negative and check the ending.
- Add a clear comparison set and いちばん to a superlative.
- Use どちら for two, and choose どれ, どの, だれ, 何, or いつ for three or more.
- Use どちらも when both options are equal or apply.
- Complete an original drink-preference dialogue with a two-item comparison, a favourite in a set, and a polite qualification.
Culture and real use
Shochu is a Japanese distilled spirit with types shaped by ingredients and region
Japan's National Tax Agency classifies shochu into continuous-distilled and pot-distilled categories; honkaku shochu is pot-distilled shochu meeting specified ingredient and production rules. Common ingredients include sweet potato, barley, rice, the corresponding koji, and water, while region and method affect aroma and flavour. 水割り, お湯割り, オンザロック, and ストレート are common menu terms. This course explains language and culture only: follow local age laws, avoid excessive drinking, and never drive after drinking.
- 焼酎は どんな お酒ですか。What kind of drink is shochu?
- 麦焼酎と 芋焼酎と どちらが 人気ですか。Which is more popular, barley or sweet-potato shochu?
- お酒は 飲みません。I do not drink alcohol.
