Core pattern

な形容詞です / ではありません / でした / ではありませんでした ・ な形容詞 + な + 名詞 ・ どんな

Beginner explanation

A na-adjective can take です at the end of a sentence, ではありません for the negative, and でした for the past. Before a noun, add な, as in 静かな町. Use どんな to ask what kind of qualities a person or thing has.

02

Understand these sentences first

  • この 町は 静かです。kono machi wa shizuka desu

    This town is quiet.

  • 駅の 近くは にぎやかです。eki no chikaku wa nigiyaka desu

The area near the station is lively.

  • ここは きれいな 公園です。koko wa kirei na kōen desu

    This is a beautiful park.

  • その ホテルは 便利では ありません。sono hoteru wa benri dewa arimasen

    That hotel is not convenient.

03

Core vocabulary

  • 有名ゆうめいfamous
  • 静かしずかquiet
  • にぎやかにぎやかlively
  • 便利べんりconvenient
  • きれいきれいbeautiful; clean
  • 元気げんきwell; energetic
  • ひまfree; not busy
  • 親切しんせつkind
04

Grammar, one point at a time

Na-adjective predicates use です now and でした in the past

N は na-adjective です/でした

Do not add な when a na-adjective is the sentence predicate. Use です for present and でした for past. The label na-adjective is a learning category, not a degree of importance.

Examples

  • この 通りは 静かです。This street is quiet.
  • 町は にぎやかでした。The town was lively.

Use ではありません for a negative and ではありませんでした for a past negative

na-adjective ではありません/ではありませんでした

A na-adjective itself does not change. Follow it with ではありません or past ではありませんでした. In conversation, では often becomes じゃ, but learn the full form for formal writing.

Examples

  • この 町は 有名ではありません。This town is not famous.
  • 昨日は 暇ではありませんでした。I was not free yesterday.

A na-adjective takes な before a noun

na-adjective な N

As a predicate say 静かです; before a noun say 静かな町. This な cannot be replaced by の or omitted.

Examples

  • きれいな 人形a beautiful doll
  • 有名な 作家a famous artist or writer

Past noun predicates use でした and ではありませんでした

N は N でした/N ではありませんでした

The noun does not inflect; make the sentence ending past. Japanese often expresses weather as a noun predicate, as in 昨日は雨でした.

Examples

  • 昨日は 日曜日でした。Yesterday was Sunday.
  • おとといは 雨ではありませんでした。It was not rainy the day before yesterday.

どんな + noun asks what kind

どんな N ですか

Use どんな + noun to ask what a person, place, book, or dish is like. The answer normally describes a quality or type rather than only naming the item.

Examples

  • 横浜は どんな 町ですか。What kind of city is Yokohama?
  • 大きくて にぎやかな 町です。It is a large, lively city.

何の asks content, material, or affiliation; どんな asks quality

何の N/どんな N

何の本ですか can ask subject, language, or category. どんな本ですか asks whether the book is interesting, difficult, thick, and so on. Match the answer to the question rather than treating them as synonyms.

Examples

  • 何の 料理ですか。— 魚の 料理です。What dish is it? — A fish dish.
  • どんな 料理ですか。— 少し 辛い 料理です。What is the dish like? — It is a little spicy.

どう asks for an impression; でも contrasts and そして adds

どうですか/どうでしたか;A。でも B;A。そして B

Use どうですか for a present or general impression and どうでしたか for a past experience. In conversation, でも contrasts information and そして adds information in the same direction; formal writing also uses other connectors.

Examples

  • 京都は どうでしたか。How was Kyoto?
  • きれいでした。でも、静かではありませんでした。It was beautiful, but it was not quiet.
  • 町は 大きいです。そして、にぎやかです。The city is large and lively.
05

Expressions and situations

きれい ends in い but is a na-adjective

The い in きれい is part of the word, not the inflectional ending of an i-adjective. Use きれいです, きれいでした, きれいではありません, and きれいな服.

  • きれいな 景色ですね。What a beautiful view.

晴れ, 雨, 曇り, and 雪 often form noun weather predicates

For past weather say 昨日は晴れでした or おとといは雨でした. Use 暑い, 寒い, 暖かい, or 涼しい for how the temperature feels.

  • 明日は 曇りです。It will be cloudy tomorrow.

あれえ marks an unexpected discovery with a lengthened sound

Say あれえ when discovering something unexpected. It is a conversational reaction and should not be inserted mechanically into formal speech or writing.

  • あれえ、だれも いませんね。Oh, nobody is here.

ところで shifts to a new topic

After acknowledging the previous topic, use ところで to introduce a more weakly related new question, like by the way. It does not connect a tight cause-and-effect relationship.

Place or period + 中 can cover the whole range

世界中, 日本中, and 学校中 cover an entire place; 一日中, 一晩中, and 一年中 cover a whole period. Here 中 is normally じゅう, but 中 does not always have one fixed reading.

  • 世界中から 観光客が 来ます。Visitors come from around the world.
  • 一日中 雨でした。It rained all day.

Adjective + の can replace a known noun

When the object is already known, an i-adjective takes の, as in 小さいの, while a na-adjective takes なの, as in 簡単なの. This の replaces a noun; it is not the noun-linking particle.

  • もう 少し 小さいのが いいです。I would like a slightly smaller one.
  • 簡単なのは ありますか。Do you have an easy one?

紅葉 can be こうよう or もみじ

こうよう often refers to the autumn colouring process or autumn foliage as a whole. もみじ often refers to red leaves, maple leaves, or foliage as an object of viewing. Choose the reading from the expression and context.

  • 紅葉が 始まりました。The autumn colours have begun.
  • 京都の 紅葉は きれいです。Kyoto's autumn leaves are beautiful.

修学旅行 is a school-organized educational trip

A 修学旅行 is organized by a school for an educational purpose and grade level. Destination, length, and whether it is domestic or overseas vary by region and school. It is not a synonym for an ordinary family trip.

06

What you should be able to do

  1. Change na-adjectives through present affirmative, present negative, past affirmative, and past negative.
  2. Switch between predicate 静かです and noun modifier 静かな町.
  3. Use noun predicates for yesterday's sun, rain, cloud, and snow.
  4. Distinguish 何の + noun from どんな + noun and give matching answers.
  5. Ask about a past experience with どうでしたか and organize two evaluations with でも or そして.
  6. Use 小さいの and 簡単なの to choose alternatives in a shop.
07

Culture and real use

Nara and Kyoto retain verifiable sites of China–Japan cultural exchange

Toshodaiji's official history says that Ganjin reached Nara in 754 after repeated failed crossings and established Toshodaiji in 759; its name reflects his Tang origins and its role in teaching Buddhist precepts. Arashiyama in Kyoto still has the Rain in Arashiyama poem monument, explicitly noted in a 2024 activity report by the Chinese Embassy in Japan. Check current opening hours, routes, and site rules with the managing organization.

  • 唐招提寺は 奈良に あります。Toshodaiji is in Nara.
  • この 場所は どんな 所ですか。What kind of place is this?
  • 紅葉は どうでしたか。How were the autumn leaves?
